This was one of three times I taped TSO in 2008 and by far it was my worst seats
but one of the better performances. I've seen TSO perhaps 10 times over the past few years now and I've always sat up
close, at least in the first 20 rows or so. But this time I decided strictly for my own enjoyment to sit in the upper
tiers to be able to experience the complete performance and light show and it was really worth it. Some of the things
that go on with the set and the lights you completely miss sitting up close unfortunately sitting where I was resulted in
a really poor, boomy recording. I never intended to release this show but then along came a surprise.

I'd be the surprise I guess. I've been scanning for several years
and I've always admired TSO but never saw them. When the opportunity came up I thought I'd give it a go and was really
happy I went. Our seats were great but my taping position was less than stellar as we were right beside the soundboard.
and under constant surveillance I felt. Making any adjustments during the show was impossible considering our location.
I've been searching for a while for another source to matrix the two together to make up for some of the things my recording
lacked. Likely for us, I did!
Production Notes
This was an interesting project as both sources had some major flaws.
The AUD source was really worthless and the SCAN, while good sounding for the most part, sounded really sterile and dry.
In addition there were several areas of heavy static
and extended dropouts. I managed to matrix the two together
fairly well with mostly a 70%-30% mix but not completely. In times of heavily static and at times of dropouts, the AUD
takes over completely. For the most part, the dropouts occurred during vocal only sections...for example during the
band introductions but the static occurred randomly thus while the matrix is good, it sometimes goes completely to pot.
That being said though, the AUD really added a depth to the SCAN that made it an enjoyable listen.
